Climbing in China - welcome to Qingdao!

Facts about Qingdao :

The red roofs, green trees, the blue sea and the azure sky form a bright and colorful picture of Qingdao. The city is known as the Switzerland of the Orient among Chinese people.

The beautiful City. To the east, only a short distance over the Yellow Sea, lie Korea and Japan. Located at the south coast of the Shandong Peninsula, Qingdao is a picturesque city framed by green hills and the blue sea. The mild climate, the bathing beach, and Mount Lao make Qingdao a popular health and holiday resort, particularly in summer when visitors come here for sightseeing and escaping the heat. The best climbing period is from the middle of March till the middle of November. If you need more detailed information about the town, please check www.internchina.org.

For thirty three years, until 1949, Qingdao was a colony of Germany and Japan. Therefore Qingdao has a huge amount of European architecture. This foreign architecture -a remnant of the colonial past- now beautifies this seaside city and will make European clamberers feel at home as soon as they step out of the “German” train station.

Qingdao is China’s tourist city number one and has much to offer on recreation days – even if your not climbing at all: Surrounded by the sea on three sides, Qingdao attracts many Chinese (and also more and more foreign) tourists with its charming seascape. Sights like the Eight Passes Villas, the Zhan Qiao Pier, the famous May 4th Square and of course the holy Mt. Lao offer a lot of activities if you’re not climbing. But also walking along the 42 kilometers long seaside promenade and listening to the surf breaking on the beach is perfectly relaxing.

Qingdao offers a great variety of food with distinctive flavors, don’t miss the chance to enjoy the delicious seafood! Furthemore, Qingdao is the home of the famous Qingdao (Tsingtao) Beer. Have a bottle of pure Qingdao Beer at it's ‘place of birth’!

And last but not least, Qingdao has also hosted sailing competitions of the 2008 Olympic Games.
